A History 05:03
Used to be made of thorns small footsteps & bad weather Hearts crawling on all fours Contents under pressure Used to be filled with fear, second-guesses & half-measures Everything seemed so unclear, last-minute & thrown together Look back babe, we've come a long long way I used to hide behinds words, self-righteous armchair professor I had my kingdom of dirt, not wise just merely clever I used to fight for my life over things that just didn't matter All the times I made you cry instead of trying to bring us together Look back babe, we've come a long long way I'm not the guy you once knew I changed right in front of you You changed a lot yourself too Same old us now brand new We used to fill up these rooms with all the heat of our anger We used to gaze at our wounds instead of keeping our eyes on forever It's not that we've been transformed We've learned to love all our thorns No longer jousting at storms or throwing ourselves overboard Look back babe, we've come a long long way I'm not the guy you once knew I changed right in front of you You changed a lot yourself too Same old us now brand new

Not Flying 04:49
We're not flying We're just falling slow & when we reach earth We'll just step down touch the ground & go Face the unknown Needing shelter so As more changes come by each other's light we will make our home We'll be the music as long as the music lasts & we might not make history but this is where I want to be & who is it threshing pain to joy? listening when you speak building a place where you can finally breathe? We'll be the music as long as the music lasts & we might not make history but this is where I want to be It's your spirit lights our corner in this injured world & in these hard days oh my dreamer we'll need dreams more & more We'll be the music as long as the music lasts & we might not make history but this is where I want to be

Dad Jeans 05:51
I'd never look good on tv & People magazine would never call me sexy but listen that's alright with me I was so unhappy in my twenties I'm listening to the greatest hits A senior citizen sang my favorite I bought a pair in the relaxed fit & i don't care about my silhouette I never learned any moves I don't mess with brand-name labels I got nothing to prove I ordered water for the table Oh yes I'm wearing comfy shoes But you should see me dance at weddings & don't pretend that you're not jealous That I'm free enough to shake this belly Shake my dad bod In my dad jeans I'm a dance god Rocking dad jeans I'm not trying to be cool I ain't looking for nobody's favor Live by the golden rule Love myself so I can love my neighbor Shake my dad bod In my dad jeans I'm a dance god Rocking dad jeans I wanna be home by nine Yeah get me to bed by ten What's so urgent about tonight? I've got a meeting at eight AM Shake my dad bod In my dad jeans I'm a dance god Rocking dad jeans Bump this in your minivan On headphones grocery shopping Take it with your lorazepam On the zoom while others are talking Shake my dad bod In my dad jeans I'm a dance god Rocking dad jeans

Tiny Yes 05:21
You woke me up after years of sleeping A flash of faith for my unbelieving You had a key for the room kept secret Inside of me I forgot existed Then you opened it just by being near it by seeing in me what I had not seen yet & everything all my fears & demons my love & strength came tumbling free then Just this once I did something right when I let you touch my face that first time Troubles will come our way by & by but your love's a tiny yes in the night Not poetry nor books of the spirit nor the junkyard dog I called a heart then had readied me for the work of healing my unraveling & joy's appearance Just this once I did something right when I let you touch my face that first time Troubles will come our way by & by but your love's a tiny yes in the night Your curious heart is home Your stubborn heart is home Your rebel heart is home Your tender heart is home

The power winks out A forest in flame A glacier falls in the sea A variant mutates again just like me A hurricane grows A volcano glows Winter forgot how to freeze Summer couldn't have known just like me It's true I survived somehow I just managed not to drown but with everything falling down that'll have to do for now A devil defects An angel goes rouge A saint loses the lottery The gods move much too slow just like me You know I meant to do you proud that's the reason why I left that town Don't wanna lose myself while gaining ground so It'll have to do for now Look at freedom fighter me burnout champion of liberty Still there sits a restless queen on a little throne inside of me It's true I survived somehow I just managed not to drown but with everything falling down that'll have to do for now You know I meant to do you proud that's the reason why I left that town Don't wanna lose myself while gaining ground so It'll have to do for now

Heat wave gives way to evening We're washed clean by the twilight wind Something broke inside me again I heard God laughing at our little plans Dancing in our kitchen again I feel your heartbeat beneath my hand You're the only sun I believe in You're my water in this world of sand I'll be the prince of sighs & you'll be the queen of night Regal as you always are dressed in this evening light Love is the wild that called us to see what's behind our faces Maybe the night will absolve us Maybe we'll learn what grace is I'll be the prince of sighs & you'll be the queen of night Regal as you always are dressed in this evening light

Taking my middle-aged face down to the laundromat today Feeling like a mental case after hours of the zoom charade Slotting the quarters in Watch the dirties start to spin Another work week begins going round & round again I'm standing with soapy hands in the dishes from last night and I been doing the best I can under the weight of life's demands Taking the garbage out & trying to not feel down in a year that's kicked us around in this most difficult of towns If the world doesn't end then we've still got tomorrow If you're holding my hand I can handle tomorrow If the world doesn't end then we've still got tomorrow If you're holding my hand I can handle tomorrow That big break may never arrive Work eats the days of our lives The shareholders sharpen their knives & we do what we need to survive Life throws a curve we didn't expect We scramble & bend in the wind to correct so I'll take a second & kiss your neck I can face any day if we just connect If the world doesn't end then we've still got tomorrow If you're holding my hand I can handle tomorrow If the world doesn't end then we've still got tomorrow If you're holding my hand I can handle tomorrow Once again we saw the signs Once again we really tried

Doors 04:15
Sometimes I have this dream in which you walk away from me to a world beyond a door. You go through & are gone once more. I try to follow but I find you’ve left no clues behind. & in the distance there I see another door waiting for me.

It's never been more true There must be more to life than this than what you read in the news Calamity & apocalypse You're exhausted & blue We both know there's no easy fix There's nothing we can do but say a prayer or make a wish We've got a moment a little scrap of time We could make something of it something beautiful just yours & mine Come over here my love You can ruin my plans This empire's crumbling anyway Let's steal a moment to dance So put away your phone Try not to think about politics You're not in this alone We've to each other to face it with We've got a moment a little scrap of time We could make something of it something beautiful just yours & mine Come over here my love You can ruin my plans This empire's crumbling anyway Let's steal a moment to dance It only takes a look the first breath of what you start to say & all my walls come tumbling down All my rabbits run your way Come over here my love You can ruin my plans This empire's crumbling anyway Let's steal a moment to dance

I used to get so lost Jumbled turned around I used to think the world was a place that I moved through You got the whole Earth at your fingertips It knows where you are & where you want to go I got a photo of you in my little phone It glows like you do like you always do No matter where you stand Center of the universe It builds itself around your every little move My whole world in your hand Little blue dot You light up the map Little blue dot It moves when you move Little blue dot Invite me to your world Little blue dot Little blue dot Little blue dot Little blue dot I got my own world held here in my hand Tell it where you are That's where I want to go I fell in love with you & your face became my home & now I point to you no matter where I go You know where I am I'm the little blue dot This could be our map us little blue dots I move when you move Little blue dot Come in to my world Little blue dot Little blue dot Little blue dot Little blue dot Love I wanna share location with you Do you wanna share location with me?

Afterparty 05:44
I forget the songs the DJ spun I forget the shine of hi-hats & drums I forget the press of dancers I forget our questions & night's answer but I remember your eyes & your unforgettable face Here we are back home alone together Here we are in the middle of forever There we go making it up as we go along There we go love & logic keep us strong I still treasure your light & your unforgettable ways Look what we started when we were both so brokenhearted Wherever we end up darling we’ll be each other's afterparty let's get lost dancing in the kitchen let's get lost washing the dishes let's get found talking til we fall asleep let's get found with these promises to keep let's surrender our nights for more unforgettable days Look what we started when we were both so brokenhearted Wherever we end up darling we’ll be each other's afterparty I woke up early holding your hand with the feeling that we'd arrived Look what we started when we were both so brokenhearted Wherever we end up darling we’ll be each other's afterparty

It's been a hard year but we're still here Seasons of hard work & days of tears It would have been easy to fall to despair To have surrendered to the fear in the air To have forgotten all we've built & done All that we fight for our life & our love But when I look over See the fire in your eyes I find that's enough love To get me through the night & even if you can't see it I draw strength from your strength Just like the moon in the morning sky Your midnight truth in daylight shines Well we won't give up No we're not that kind With our stubborn hearts & our hungry minds & though I don't believe In fate or destiny I just know I'm my best self darling when you're with me Even if you don't believe it Your faith revives my faith Just like the moon in the morning sky your midnight truth in daylight shines As my days come & go there's less & less that I know until there's nothing left to show but this love for you I suppose Just like the moon in the morning sky your midnight truth in daylight shines

The Glory 04:12
I wake up with your hand in mine some mornings Watch the sun come up next to you while you sleep These days I find chaos so boring Our quiet kingdom & you are all I need I dreamed last night I saw you walking toward me Yesterday I saw you on some show on tv & you know all along love that I've believed in everything that you & I might could be Oh the glory of whatever happens next If it isn't beautiful we'll make it beautiful & figure out the rest Oh the glory of whatever happens next If it isn't beautiful we'll make it beautiful & figure out the rest

It sounded like fun when we said yes but now it's just another thing to do I don't know if I'd be able to be here if not for you We spent all day feeding pieces of ourselves to all these machines But even so neither of us is coming apart at the seams You always look gorgeous no matter what you wear & sometimes it seems like you just stepped out of a magic doorway from my dreams So send me a message Tell me where you'll be I get off work at 5 Just tell me where to meet & you & me go walking arm in arm down Shubhani's street You & me go walking arm in arm down Shubhani's street Most times I'd rather stay home but sometimes you get me out I don't know why I worry it’s fun with you just walking around So meet me on the corner by the Blue Note we'll get coffee, we'll get kati rolls Pick up some cupcakes Go shopping for books You know they're good for the soul Stop by the market in the square Ask our friend if she wants anything Then stroll hand in hand down the one-way streets in love with everything So send me a message Tell me where you'll be I get off work at 5 Just tell me where to meet & you & me go walking arm in arm down Shubhani's street

about

In the spring of 2020, with the COVID pandemic keeping us indoors and away from in-person social life, I began writing songs for what I thought would become the third Love In The Ruins album. But when I brought the in-progress songs to my bandmate, Dana, the feedback I kept getting was “I think you should sing this one.” After this happened multiple times I began to envision a new project - one that terrified me because I have never considered myself a singer.
Once I began to think about the songs as being sung by me though, I began to write differently, and began to focus more on the deep domesticity of pandemic lockdown, of being in a little New York City apartment with one’s beloved, and then about my life with my wife, Mahira, the ways in which I’ve grown & changed, how we’ve grown together, how we’ve slowly moved over the years from being two people living together to being one married couple caring for & supporting & enjoying each other in the midst of so many crises and apocalypses.
As I began to record the final versions of the songs, lockdown was ending, and then I began to imagine a project that included as many of my musician friends as possible - “a room with all my friends in it,” was how I put it to Mahira. So I began inviting my friends to collaborate and contribute and I am blessed that so many of them wanted to, and did.
On the one hand, then, this project is a collection of love songs written in & about the solitude of a couple in love living together, & on the other hand, it’s an ode to friendship & community. Of course, one needs both the intimacy of loving partnership & the joyous gathering of community. You can hear both in the songs. I know I can hear both, like notes in a chord, ringing in my life.
